WITH FIONA CALLANAN
Find your potential through learning inversions, backbends and more in a truly accessible way. A workshop for teachers and students of all yoga styles and of all abilities.
Yoga poses (asana) can be practised and taught in many different ways. Every body has countless valid possibilities, and each pose can be adapted accordingly. This is the foundation of accessible yoga.
At the same time, when we talk about “alignment” what we really mean is “action”. Particularly the actions that we want the different parts of our bodies to make in the poses. And what we find when we work in a focused way to create these actions is that we can measure our progress in the poses, and in that way see our potential more clearly. And when we can see our potential more clearly, we are able to live into it. To expand.
Open to teachers and students of all levels, this workshop with Fiona will:
– Teach the precise, specific alignments (ie. actions) in the arms and shoulders for all asana where your arms are overhead including Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana), Full Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana), and all three inversions: Headstand (Sirsasana), Forearm Stand (Pincha Mayurasana) and Handstand (Adho Mukha Vrksasana)
– Help you to understand how to apply these to your particular body so that you can measure your progress with accuracy and precision, giving you suggestions for modifications as and where needed
– Explain how and why this approach to teaching and practice is accessible
– Give you guidance on how to incorporate all of this into your teaching (if you are a teacher) and practice (for everybody)
This workshop is for you if you are looking to deepen your knowledge of alignment and accessibility so that you can improve, as a student or a teacher of yoga, or both.
ABOUT FIONA CALLANAN
Fiona is a senior 4Beat Yoga, alignment and inversions teacher, teaching the practice on trainings, in workshops and at studios across London. Fiona got into Yoga in 2014, 10 years after she lost her right leg below the knee in the Asian tsunami of 2004, and was blown away when she realised that her body’s potential had only ever been limited by her mind. As a result Fiona also teaches regular trainings and workshops for both teachers and students on how to access all the possibilities that this amazing practice brings.
As well as teaching yoga Fiona is a lawyer, TEDx Speaker, single mum of two great kids, and disability advocate.
Fiona’s classes are rooted in classical Iyengar alignment principles updated using modern functional movement techniques.
Fiona creates a safe and joyful space for her students to learn, aiming always to encourage autonomy and critical thinking in the practice, both on and off the mat.
